Hurricane Ian Flash Estimate
September 30, 2022
Hurricane Ian underwent rapid intensification and made landfall near Fort Myers, Florida with 150 mph winds, making it a strong Category 4 hurricane. Ian generated a large storm surge that swept across barrier islands like Captiva and Sanibel, and inundated large portions of the west Florida coastline including the cities of Naples and Fort Myers. Heavy rainfall from Hurricane Ian led to inland flooding across Central Florida as the storm crossed the peninsula. After exiting the east coast of Florida and re-emerging over the Atlantic Ocean as a tropical storm, Ian re-intensified to a Category 1 hurricane with 85 mph winds and made a second US landfall in South Carolina.
