Image of historical earthquakes and the tectonic plate boundaries near Acapulco

KCC Event Brief - M7.0 Mexico Earthquake

On September 7, at 8:47 PM local time, an M7.0 event ruptured near Acapulco City. Seismicity in this region is associated with the subduction of the Cocos Plate beneath the North America Plate along the Middle America Trench. Historically, eight M7.0 and greater earthquakes have occurred in this region. Damage from the September 2021 event was largely non-structural, although ground motion was felt as far away as Mexico City.
