Lessons from Typhoon Jebi

September marks the one year anniversary of Typhoon Jebi, which caused the highest insured losses from a typhoon in the Asia-Pacific region. Insured loss estimates rose from the initial numbers as low as $2 billion to a current estimate of over $15 billion.

This white paper illustrates why the insured loss should not have been a surprise to modeling companies or (re)insurers and discusses the nature of the damage as observed by the KCC post-event survey team. It also provides guidance on how frequently (re)insurers can expected losses this size and larger based on the KCC’s new high-resolution Japan Typhoon Reference Model.
