CATLAB™ Workshop: Severe Convective Storm (SCS) Modeling

Boston, MA – July 20, 2017

Insured losses from severe convective storms (SCS) have been above average for the past decade with multi-billion dollar events increasing in frequency. The most recent KCC CATLAB Workshop highlighted tools available to insurers and reinsurers to evaluate impacts of SCS on their portfolios and to examine potential climatological trends contributing to increasing SCS losses.

Held in Boston from July 18-19, the immersive educational experience included an in-depth view of the science, methodology, and validation of the KCC US SCS Reference Model, a hands-on demonstration of the software, and discussions with insurers and reinsurers about the practical applications of the model. Additionally, Dr. Michael Tippett from Columbia University discussed climatological factors influencing SCS events, including ENSO and climate change.

Sessions for this CATLAB Workshop included:

  • Introduction to the KCC SCS Reference Model
  • Running the SCS MPM (Multi-Peril Model) in RI4.5
  • SCS modeling methodology and model validation
  • Practical uses of the KCC SCS Reference Model
  • Real time event tracking for hurricanes and SCS
  • "Impact of ENSO on tornado and Hail Frequencies," presented by Dr. Michael Tippett
  • SCS model future enhancements and discussion

CATLAB Workshops are periodically held for KCC client companies and provide unparalleled access to KCC scientists and experts, who are always available to answer questions from participants. By participating in the workshop alongside the experts who developed the models, catastrophe modeling professionals gain a deeper knowledge of the inner workings of KCC models and software.
